Our Production Process

Our Vermont Biochar is made from wood harvested restoratively using modern animal power and worst first logging.  The use of animal power and the specific forestry techniques we employ mean our biochar is truly carbon negative and has real ecological integrity from start to finish.

Inside the kiln: loading the wood in neat stacks for best gas flow during pyrolosis.  It takes about 1 cord of wood per load. The kiln is loaded the day before firing it.

The fire box provides the heat that 'cooks' the wood through pyrolosis.  Pyrolosis is burning in the absence of oxygen.  The firing of our kiln is an all day process, starting at 7:00 AM the kiln heats up with the feeding of the firebox until around noon.  When the moisture is cooked off and the volatile gases are being released from the wood it is ready to switch to the gasification mode.  This mode lasts from noon until around 4:00-5:30 PM when the kiln is shut down and cooling begins.

The kiln is unloaded the morning after the main firing.  We unload it into metal cans to cool it off before grinding. 

We use a simple chipper shredder to grind our charcoal into the perfect consistency for use in soils.  Prior to grinding we wet the charcoal and inoculate it with a blend of microbes and mycchoryzae.  After grinding it is ready to be used in any farming and gardening application.

There are many ways to apply biochar,  spread with manure and disked in.  Added to a bedding pack or compost pile.  Spread by hand on raised beds or mixed with potting soil.  We find biochar benefits all of our farming and gardening endeavors.
